Anita founded Anita Cheng Dance in 2000. She is the receipient of a Fulbright Grant in choreography to Hong Kong (1991) and Experimental Television Center Grants for the realization of two dances with video, both of which were presented at Dixon Place (1998, 1999). In 2001 she was one of four emerging choreographers invited to the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival to take part in a joint workshop with compositional fellows at Tanglewood Music Center. She was also invited to participate in the 8th and 9th Biennial Art and Technology Symposiums at Connecticut College. In 2002, the Symposium presented “Second Nature,” Cheng’s choreography with dancer Meg Harper that features live technology. In 2003, Cheng received a New York Foundation for the Arts Artist’s Fellowship with collaborator Ronaldo Kiel. Cheng & Kiel also share a 2004-5 Digital Fellowship at Dance Theater Workshop’s Artist Resource and Media Lab (ARM) and a 2005 Brooklyn Arts Council Grant. This summer, Cheng has been invited for a residency at the Bellagio Study and Conference Center, in Italy. She has also received a 2005 commission from Mullberry St. Theater’s Ear to the Ground Series for a new dance.

Cheng has a University of Michigan MFA in Dance. She has danced for Ann Arbor Danceworks and Whitley Setrakian & Dancers as well as for choreographers including Gay Delange, Jessica Fogel, Betsy Fisher, Tran T. Thuc Hahn and Elaine Shipman. She studies at the Cunningham Studio and enjoys pilates with Shelly Studenburg and ballet with Jocelyn Lorenz. She has taught dance and technology workshops at Hunter College, the University of Michigan and other places. For Spring 2005, she continues as Adjunct Instructor for the Hunter College Film and Media Studies Department.
